Training was a Disaster!

Following a great Saturday training session about personal preparedness, disaster response organizations, and techniques for responding to emergencies, the training exercise was struck by disaster. That's right. Participants were involved in training exercises filled with challenges and surprises common during disaster response. Trainees took on different roles and experienced first-hand that emergency response is a challenging, yet rewarding experience. Read more...
After designing and setting up a collection center for donations, community members swarmed the site. Donations flooded the center, both expected and unexpected. The media showed up, and other suprises materialized. As trainees wrestled with the trainer-initiated problems, they began to realize paper processes do not simply become reality. They began to ask, "Is this really what happens?" Of course, the training was setup to inundate them with the many different issues they may experience, but they were all based on reality.
At the end of the second day, you could see an excitement in their faces. They were no longer trainees, but certified, tested disaster response volunteers. They DID create a collection center. They DID establish a distribution center. Thanks to the leaders and the tenacity of those who participated, the disaster response training at W. Wilmington Adventist Church resulted in a community better prepared.
